Walleye League

It has been a blast being league director of the first season for the Lake of the Woods Walleye League.  I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone that has taken part in the inaugural season.  We fought bad weather and high winds in the first part of the season but the second half and the Championship Event was very nice.

 

The Championship was held on Saturday in beautiful weather.  The fishing, however, was a bit challenging…. Again!!  When the boaters returned to the dock for the weigh-in they were all just shaking their heads.  The spots that earlier had held fish during pre-fishing were coming up blank, they were in shock.  Three teams did not bring any fish to the scales and one team that did have a nice start on a big basket had boat trouble and had to be towed in and missed the weigh-in. 

 

The winners of the Championship were Adam Harder and Nate Olafson who earned a check for $204.90.  Coming in second were Walleye Jon Berns and Mike Hugg who claimed a check of $170.50.  In third place were Rick Thompson and Tracy Wahl who earned a check of $136.60.

 

Also awarded on Saturday were the awards for the top three regular season finishers.  Coming in first in the regular season were Walleye Jon Berns and Hike Hugg who earned $121.50 for their top finish.  In second place were Old Guide Pat Fischer and Ken Parnham who claimed a check for $85.05.  In third place were Nate Olafson and Adam Harder earned $36.45.

 

In total $926 in cash was awarded on Saturday as well as a $50 gift card donated by Streiff Sporting Goods, a $50 Streiff gift card donated by Gary Olson, a drift sock donated by Riverside Bait & Tackle, 2 fillet knives and 2 floating pliers donated by the Marvin Home Center.

 

It has been a lot of fun this summer, thanks again to everyone that participated.

Lake of the Woods Walleye League

Event #8  July 28, 2007

 

Saturday was the last regular season event for the Lake of the Woods Walleye League.  The morning was beautiful, warm and still.  The fishing was pretty good for most with some of the biggest baskets of the season, but like the other events this summer everyone caught fish but some teams had trouble catching fish in the 14 – 19.5 inch slot. 

 

In third place this week was Walleye Jon Berns and Mike Hugg with a full basket of 6 walleyes that weighed in at 9.75 pounds.  In second place was Jeremy Karnowski and substitute partner Chris Olson who also had six fish at 10.30 pounds.  The winners this week with their 3rd first place finish of the season were Tim Hunter and Brandon Norling with 6 huge walleyes that weighed 12.60 pounds.

 

 

 

With the final event results in hand, the winners of the regular season have been established.  In third place with 480 points are Adam Harder and Nate Olafson with 480 points.  In second place are Old Guide Pat Fischer and Ken Parnham with 482 points.   The Winners of the regular season in the Lake of the Woods Walleye League are Walleye Jon Berns and Mike Hugg with 486 points.

 

The end of the season Championship Tournament will be held on August 4 at the point in Warroad.

Event #7  July 12, 2007

 

 

 

 

 

Event 7 started out much like all the rest with the wind blowing hard from the NW at 15+ MPH, but when the boys came back for the weigh in the wind had diminished substantially to make it a beautiful evening.

On the start boats went in every direction with some boats traveling a long ways, but by the end of fishing time it looked like they were having a party on the sand bar near spring Steel Island, almost all the league boats were there.  All the fish weighed-in came from that area and ½ of them came in the last ½ hour.

Winners tonight were Travis Johnson and Richard Jacobson with 2 fish that weighed 2.25 lbs.  In second place were Walleye Jon Berns and Mike Hugg with 2 fish that weighed 2.10 lbs and in third place tonight was Pat Fischer and Ken Parnham with 1 fish that weighed 1.70 pound.

The highlight of the evening came a couple of minutes before 9:00, with all the boats arriving at the dock for check-in, an man fishing off the end of the long dock caught a very nice 18 inch walleye that left everyone shaking their heads.

Event #5 June 23, 2007

 

Today was a beautiful day on Lake of the Woods for the 5th walleye league event.  We had a good turnout again with 12 teams fishing.  The winds were light, the temperature was warm and the sun shone bright.  The fishing was pretty good with 9 teams weighing in fish at the noon weigh in.  I went for a boat ride during the event to see were teams were fishing and found teams fishing from ¼ mile from the dock out to 12 mile reef and after the event I heard boats went as far as 16 mile reef and Arnesons reef. 

 

 

 

The winners this week were Walleye Jon Berns and Mike Hugg with a full 6 fish limit that weighed in at 11.2 pounds and they earned $84 for their first place finish.  Coming in second place was Pat Fischer and Ken Parnham with 4 fish that weighed in at 5.25 pounds, they claimed a check of $58.8 for their effort.  In Third place for the day was Adam Harder and Jeremy Sisler with 4 fish that came in at 4.40 pounds and earned a check of $25.20

Event #4 June 8, 2007

 Well the weather threw us another challenge, event #4 was supposed to be held on Thursday June 7.  The wind was blowing 30 gusting 40 out of the north rolling huge waves into Warroad all day and a rain was on the way so we decided to hold event #4 the next night, Friday June 8, 2007.  When Friday evening came the wind had picked up again and was blowing 20 mph but it was from the southwest so it was coming offshore which made it tolerable.  A season high 13 teams made up of 26 hardy fishermen braved the wind and headed out at 6:00 pm.  When the teams checked by in at 9:00 the wind had calmed down to make it a beautiful evening on lake of the Woods.  The fishing was a bit tough due to the stormy, rainy and windy weather that passes though in the previous 36 hours but 10 teams managed to weigh fish in the 14 to 19-1/2 inch slot. 

 

Third place tonight was won team #1 Arlyn Melvie and Larry Fieckert with 2 fish that weighed in at 3.30 lbs.  Second place was claimed by team #5 Adam Harder and substitute partner Jeremy S. with 4 fish that weighed in at 6.10 lbs.  The winners for LOW Walleye League event  #4 were Tim Hunter and Substitute partner Dave Johnston with 5 fish that weighed 8.00 lbs.

Event #3  5/31/07

 Event number 3 is in the books and once again the teams had to work hard for their fish.  Everyone caught fish but like in all tournaments with a slot limit it can be a challenge to catch the right size ones in the 3 hours time slot. Tonight there was a lot of small fish caught, 12 and 13 inchers, and once again several over the 19-1/2” upper threshold.   We had a season high 10 teams in the event tonight and gave out $140 in prize money plus $30 went into the championship purse and $30 for the end regular season top 3 teams purse.

 

For event # 3, third place was claimed by Patrick Fischer (Old Guide) and Ken Parham with 2 fish that weighed in at 2.65 lbs.  Second place was won by Travis Johnson and Richard Jacobson with 4 fish that weighed in at 4.50.  The first place team for event #3 was Rick Thompson and Tracy Wahl with 5 fish that weighed 6.05 pounds.

Lake of the Woods Walleye League   
  Event 2 Results

 The second league event was scheduled for Saturday May 26 but the weather was terrible.  The wind was blowing 20-30 mph coming right off the lake into the River and it was forecast to rain all morning.  Lake of the Woods had so many waves breaking it looked like snowdrifts on the ice.  The diehard fishermen that showed up met at 7:30 am for a meeting to decide what to do and chose to postpone the league event until the next morning.  The fact that 4 teams showed up without their boats gave an indication of what their thoughts were.

 

Sunday morning was beautiful.  The crew met up, marveled at the improvement in the weather and took off for their hot spots at 8:00 am sharp.  The fishing was a little slow, everyone caught fish but many had trouble finding the ones in the league slot of 14 to 19-1/2 inches long. There were lots of fish caught under the 14 inch minimum and several that were over the magical 19-1/2 inch mark.

 

The winning basket of fish was caught by a father and son team from Roseau, Jerry and Chris Olson, with a 4 fish weight of 5.90 pounds.  Second place was claimed Rick Thompson and Tracy Wahl of Warroad with 2 Walleyes that weighed in at 3.3 pound.  Walleye Jon Berns of Karlstad and Steve Jacobson of Fosston won third place with 2 fish that weighed 3.10 pounds.

The next league event will be held at the Point in Warroad 6-9pm Thursday May 31.
